The Deadly Nature Of Motorcycle Accidents And Recommended Safety Measures

Motorcycle rider safety is an ongoing concern, given the many serious injuries (that may lead to fatalities) that occur during motorcycle crashes.  As seen in many Illinois motorcycle accidents summarized on this site, these accidents have resulted in a broad range of accident injuries, as well as those that result in fatalities to either the motorcyclist and/or passenger.

There are many reasons why motorcycle accidents are typically highly physically traumatic.  Among these reasons is that motorcyclists have very little if any impact protection if they are in a collision.  As well, there is no restraint of the motorcyclist, and many motorcycle accidents involve the motorcyclist being ejected from the motorcycle.  Such ejections typically cause serious if not life-threatening accident injuries.

On November 20, 2017 (National Institutes of Health) released “Motorcycle Crashes Far More Deadly Than Car Crashes.”  Various aspects of motorcycle crashes are discussed, with a particular focus on statistics and reasons for fatal motorcycle accidents.

An excerpt, quoting Kara Macek, a spokesperson for the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA):

Macek also agreed that the patterns found in this study would turn up elsewhere. In fact, according to the GHSA, U.S. data show that for every mile driven, motorcycles have a death rate that’s 26 times higher than that of passenger vehicles.

Also mentioned is the danger of riding a motorcycle after drinking:

Alcohol is another issue. Of all U.S. motorcyclists killed in accidents in 2015, 27 percent were intoxicated, according to the GHSA.

Among safety steps mentioned by the GHSA is to not use alcohol before riding; obey the speed limit; and wear a motorcycle helmet.  In Illinois, wearing a motorcycle helmet is not mandatory.  However, there are many safety benefits of wearing a motorcycle helmet.  If a motorcycle crash occurs, a helmet can greatly reduce the possibility of a serious head injury.  Traumatic brain injuries, depending upon their severity, can be among the worst accident injuries that can result during an accident, as such head injuries can lead to fatalities.  Serious head injuries that are not fatal can cause various impairments, both on a temporary as well as on a permanent basis.  Many aspects of traumatic brain injuries, especially those resulting from motorcycle accidents, are further discussed on the “Head Injuries Resulting From Motorcycle Accidents” page.
