Road hazards continue to be a significant concern to motorcyclists. On this site, many such road hazards have been discussed as they have caused many Illinois motorcycle accidents causing injuries. Some of these accidents have led to the death of a rider or riders.
Road hazards can take many different forms. Due to the inherent stability needed to safely ride a motorcycle, any factor that causes instability can lead to a crash. Some road hazards that have been discussed on this site include deer, loose gravel, standing water, and potholes and other pavement deformities.
Road hazards can be difficult to avoid as they are often unexpected, or can suddenly present themselves. One example is a deer that suddenly runs onto a roadway in front of an oncoming bike.
Another type of dangerous situation to motorcycle riders is grass clippings that are on the roadway. Often, such clippings are generated by commercial mowing that occurs on the the side of the roadway. Often, such grass is high, as it is infrequently mowed, and as such the clippings can be significant.
As discussed in many sources, such grass clippings that are on the roadway can create slippery conditions for motorcyclists. As such, riders try to avoid running over such grass clippings.
There was a fatal motorcycle accident Monday (June 10, 2019) in Bureau County.
According to various media sources, including the June 12, 2019 kwqc.com article titled “Illinois motorcyclist killed after grass clippings left on road,” this fatal motorcycle crash occurred on County Highway Route 6. As a group of riders encountered grass on the highway, one rider (Thomas Zeglen) slowed to avoid grass on the highway. Another rider, his wife Cheryl Zeglen, who was riding behind him, crashed into him and was ejected from her motorcycle.
Cheryl Zeglen died in the hospital from her accident injuries two days later.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this issue of road hazards for motorcyclists can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article seen above. The April 2019 kwqc.com article titled “Riders say grass clippings left on road endanger motorcyclists” further discusses the danger of this type of road hazard.
