Risky Motorcycle Riding That Leads To Accidents And Injuries

Risky motorcycle riding often leads to loss of motorcycle control. Loss of control accidents continue to be one of the most common types of Illinois motorcycle accidents. While this loss of motorcycle control can happen for many different reasons, among those reasons is if rider error occurs.

As well, risky motorcycle riding, such as stunt riding, speeding, and other activities such as lane-splitting can lead to a loss of motorcycle control.

The August 2, 2021 CBS Chicago article (with video) titled “Stunt Motorcycle Riding On Stevenson Expressway Leads To Fiery Crash…” discusses recent motorcycle stunt riding. The stunt riding shown in the video included “popping a wheelie” and the motorcyclist touching his feet together in midair. At least one of the riders crashes his bike.

The “High-Risk Motorcycle Actions” page further discusses various types of motorcycle riding that is considered to increase the risk of a crash. Speeding and other forms of reckless driving are discussed, as well as other forms of risky motorcycle riding.

An excerpt from the page:

Speeding is a primary cause of motorcycle accidents, as seen in the descriptions of many crashes.  Given the power of many modern motorcycles, and the ease in which high speeds can be quickly reached, high speeds on many motorcycles, especially sport bikes, are easily attainable.  For instance, it is not uncommon for fast motorcycles to go 0-60 in 3 seconds – if not less.  These powerful sport bikes also commonly do the quarter mile in the 10- and 11-second range, with top speeds at or above 150 mph.

As seen in many Illinois motorcycle accidents summarized on this site, risky motorcycle riding has led to many crashes. A significant percentage of these crashes lead to fatalities.

Many such fatal Illinois motorcycle accidents have involved a rider or riders approaching a curve at excessive speed. This is particularly problematical if the rider is unfamiliar with the curve and as such does not know what speed is appropriate for negotiating the curve.
