Motorcycle Accident On Indiana Toll Road Kills Man, Critically Injures His Fiancee

A motorcyclist was killed today and his female passenger critically injured stemming from a motorcycle accident on the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) in Lake County, Indiana.

The couple have been identified as Chris J. Schrad, 29, and the passenger – also his fiancee – as Shelly Pierce, 34.  Both are from Webster City, Iowa.  The accident occurred around 2:55 p.m. at the Broadway exit.

According to witness accounts, the couple was riding a 2001 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle through a construction zone in the left lane.  As they headed into a curve, a loss of control was experienced as they hit gravel on the shoulder.

The bike then fishtailed and went across the right lane, thereby hitting a guard rail.  Schrad and Pierce were thrown from the motorcycle.  Schrad was thrown 428 feet and through a fence, according to police.  Pierce was thrown 122 feet.

Schrad was pronounced dead at the scene.  Pierce was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary, with critical injuries.
