Mechanical issues are one of many reasons why a motorcyclist may be involved in a motorcycle accident.
Generally speaking, motorcycle accidents occur for the following reasons:
- another motorist may be at fault with causing an accident that injures a motorcyclist
- the motorcyclist’s own actions may cause a motorcycle crash
- a motorcyclist may be injured due to another factor.
These other factors include a broad range of road hazards that may cause the rider to crash.
As well, there are other issues, broadly defined as mechanical issues, that if present can cause a motorcycle accident. These mechanical issues may involve defective parts or defective components.
Another issue may be a blown tire. Due to the stability needed to control the motorcycle, any issue with rapid air loss in a motorcycle tire can cause instability that can cause a loss of motorcycle control. In the case of a blown tire, very rapid air loss occurs during the tire blowout. The motorcycle can rapidly become unstable and very hard to control. If the motorcycle is being ridden at a considerable speed at the time of the blowout, the odds of a traumatic crash occurring are high.
There have been various Illinois motorcycle accidents in which a tire blowout causes a motorcycle accident with injuries. Some of these injuries were fatal in nature.
There was a May 16, 2019 motorcycle crash in Portage, IN in which the motorcyclist claims he was having a mechanical issue, specifically a problem with the throttle. This incident led to a crash in which the rider’s leg was partially severed. The crash is summarized in the May 17, 2019 Post-Tribune article titled “Motorcyclist’s leg partially severed in Portage crash.”
There are various steps one can take to minimize the possibility of encountering mechanical problems while riding a motorcycle. These steps are discussed on the “Mechanical Problems On Motorcycles” page. Of particular concern is if the motorcycle has not been ridden for a prolonged time period.
