As seen in many Illinois motorcycle accidents, motorcycles are often hit by vehicles that are turning. Many of these collisions involve vehicles that make a left-hand turn immediately in front of an oncoming motorcycle. However, accidents can also occur when a vehicle makes a right-hand turn into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
In both instances, motorists often admit to “not seeing” the motorcycle before attempting to make the turn.
“Not seeing” motorcycles – or otherwise being unaware of the presence of a motorcycle – can happen at any time during the year. However, this risk to motorcyclists can be greater early in the motorcycle season, when motorists aren’t used to interacting with motorcycles.
Other early-season motorcycle safety issues are discussed on the “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page.
