Late-Night Motorcycle Riding Accident Along Bishop Ford Freeway

Late-night motorcycle riding poses various risks to motorcyclists. One of the foremost risks is visibility and awareness by motorists. This visibility and awareness of motorcycles is more difficult if the motorist is driving while impaired.

Drunk drivers continue to pose a large threat to motorcyclists. On this site, many motorcycle accidents involving drunk drivers colliding with a motorcycle have been discussed. As well, there is the growing risk of motorcyclists being hit by a driver impaired by drug use. The threat posed by “drugged drivers” is further discussed on the “The Danger To Motorcyclists Presented By Drugged Drivers” page.

Drunk drivers and drugged drivers are less likely to see and be able to react to motorcycles. While drunk drivers also pose a traffic safety threat to both themselves as well as other motorists, the intoxicated motorist is less likely “to see” a motorcycle as opposed to other types of vehicles. Drunk driving accidents tend to happen at night, after the driver has been drinking.

Late-night motorcycle riding was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident early Friday (December 6, 2019) on Chicago’s Far South Side. This fatal accident occurred on the Bishop Ford Freeway in Morgan Park.

According to Illinois State Police, a vehicle hit a motorcycle at about 2:15 a.m. The accident occurred in the I-94 northbound lanes, near 111th Street. After hitting the motorcycle, the driver continued to drive, i.e. the driver left the accident scene.

The motorcyclist was identified as Eric Smith, 44.

The driver who hit Smith was apprehended. He was identified as a 42-year-old man.
