As discussed on the “‘Head-On Collisions’ Involving Motorcycles” page, there are many reasons why such accidents are difficult for motorcyclists to avoid. An excerpt from that page:
One of the common reasons for motorcycle accidents – and one that has often deadly consequences for motorcyclists – is when bikes are involved in “head-on collisions.” These frontal accidents have led to many fatalities. Ways to avoid these types of accidents are limited, as they often involve another vehicle coming into the opposing lane, i.e. “crossing the center line.” Often it hard to predict when a vehicle will drive into opposing traffic; as well, such improper lane usage typically provides (very) limited reaction time for the motorcyclist to avoid a “head-on collision.” Even for those motorcyclists that choose to “lay down the bike” accidents usually lead to serious if not fatal injuries.
As well, due to a motorcycle’s lack of structural impact protection, such frontal collisions are often highly forceful to the motorcyclist. There have been many fatal motorcycle accidents in which a motorcycle has been struck by a vehicle that has “crossed the center line” and hit the motorcycle.
There has been a fatal motorcycle collision in Williamson County (Southern Illinois) on July 8, 2018 which is being attributed to a vehicle crossing over the center line and hitting a motorcycle in a “head-on collision.”
The collision involving a motorcycle and another vehicle occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. on Corinth Road east of Johnston City, between Old Ben Road and Becker Road.
An excerpt from the July 9, 2018 wsiltv.com article (with video) titled “Marion man dies in crash on Corinth Road,“: mentioning Williamson County Coroner Junior Burke:
Burke said the driver of the vehicle crossed over the center line and hit the motorcycle head-on.
The motorcyclist was identified as Robert Rich, 55, of Marion. He was declared dead at 3:40 p.m. Sunday.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the Williamson County Coroner’s Office and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal Southern Illinois motorcycle accident involving a “head-on collision” can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the July 10 wjpf.com article titled “Victim identified in deadly motorcycle/auto accident.”
