Fatal Motorcycle Crash On I-80 Ramp In New Lenox

Warm weather in the Chicago area has led to a recent large increase in the number of motorcyclists who have been recently riding.  As discussed on the “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page, riding a motorcycle in Illinois both before and during the early motorcycle season can present various additional safety risks to the rider.

One frequent cause of recent motorcycle accidents – and one that has led to fatalities – is the rider’s loss of control of the motorcycle.  Motorcycle loss of control can be caused by a wide range of factors.  The issue is further discussed on the “Motorcycle Loss Of Control Accidents” page.

There was a fatal motorcycle accident Sunday evening (February 19, 2017) on an I-80 ramp in New Lenox.   Preliminary information indicates that this fatal crash involved a loss of motorcycle control.

According to information provided by the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Will County Coroner’s Office, the accident happened as a motorcyclist was traveling on the I-80 westbound ramp to I-355 at approximately 5:40 p.m.   At that time, the rider lost control of the motorcycle,  and the motorcycle left the roadway.  The motorcycle came to rest in the grass median.

The motorcyclist was identified as Reuben W. Richardson, 55, of Naperville.  He was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
