There was a fatal motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon (June 26, 2016) on Interstate 74 (I-74) near Mahomet in Champaign County.
The accident, which only involved the motorcycle, happened near mile marker 176. The accident happened shortly before 3:20 p.m., when a motorcyclist was traveling westbound through a construction zone.
An excerpt from the June 27, 2016 The News-Gazette article titled “1 dead after in accident on I-74 near Mahomet“:
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Norman Lucas, 63, of Princeton was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near mile marker 176. Northrup said Lucas was traveling west through a construction zone on the highway when he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him, lost control of his motorcycle and left the road.
Lucas died at the accident scene.
This fatal Illinois motorcycle accident is under investigation by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police (ISP).
