One of the recurring hazards facing motorcyclists – and one that is the cause of many motorcycle accidents – is that of motorists not “seeing” motorcycles. (this issue – and recommendations to lessen the hazard – is discussed in a variety of posts in the “Motorcycle Rider Safety” category)
There was another example of this in a fatal motorcycle crash Sunday (June 1, 2014) in unincorporated Marengo, Illinois.
McHenry County Sheriffs responded to the intersection of Meyer Road and Route 20, the scene of this motorcycle crash, at approximately 9:01 a.m.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, this motorcycle accident involved a pickup truck that had stopped at a stop sign on Meyer Road, and attempted to turn left onto Route 20. As the driver attempted to do so, he collided with a Suzuki motorcycle.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the pickup “observed the roadway to be clear,” whereas the motorcyclist was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
The pickup truck driver was identified as Alifonso Morales, 48, of Marengo. He was uninjured during the collision. He was cited for “failing to yield at a stop intersection.”
The motorcyclist was identified as William G. Hurley, 55, of Cary. He was first taken to Centegra Woodstock, and then taken (via Flight For Life) to Condell Hospital. He later died.
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the June 2, 2014 McHenry County Sheriff’s Office media release titled “Fatal Vehicle Traffic Crash In Marengo” as well as the June 2, 2014 Huntley Patch article titled “Cary Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash.”
