There was a fatal I-57 motorcycle accident Thursday (July 26, 2018) south of Salem, Illinois. The accident appears to have involved a car that “rear-ended” a motorcycle. Following the crash, the car’s driver was charged with reckless homicide.

Police said Jonathan Trotter, 21, was speeding when his car ran into the back of a motorcycle on Interstate 57 south of Salem, Illinois. The accident claimed the life of Mason Wathan of Centralia, Illinois. Wathan, 23 was pronounced dead at the scene at around 4:30 a.m. July 26.
The reckless homicide charge claims Trotter was operating his car “at a greater speed than was reasonable or proper,” striking Wathan’s motorcycle. A public defender has been appointed to represent Trotter. A judge has set bond at $25,000.
The crash was reported at 4:37 a.m. I-57 northbound, near Centralia, where the crash occurred, was closed as part of the accident investigation from approximately 5:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
