One of the potential hazards facing motorcyclists is road hazards. While road hazards can take many forms, one of the most problematical remains deer suddenly running onto the roadway.
There are many reasons why such crashes are difficult to avoid. Deer are very unpredictable in nature, and can sudden appear without warning. As well, their movements can be fast and abrupt. They often travel with other deer.
While deer travel in an unpredictable manner, there are various seasonal factors that apply. As well, deer collisions with vehicles tend to happen at certain times of the day.
There have been a number of Illinois crashes that occurred after a deer collided with a motorcycle. Other crashes occur when the motorcycle rider swerves to avoid a deer, only to crash while avoiding the deer. A number of these crashes have been discussed on this site.
The subject of these collisions is further discussed on the “Road Hazards – Deer” page. Various statistics, as well as seasonal factors, are mentioned on this page. Also discussed is what to do if you encounter deer while riding.
