There was a fatal motorcycle accident Friday morning (May 26, 2017) in Coles County.
The accident involved a “head-on collision” involving a passenger car and motorcycle.
According to information provided by the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was eastbound on County Road 1000N, about two miles east of Loxa Road. At approximately 8:21 a.m., the motorcycle collided with a car in the “head-on collision.” Shortly before the collision, the car (a Mazda sedan) was traveling westbound and was behind a semi truck. The driver attempted to pass the truck and reportedly did not see the motorcycle in the opposite lane.
The motorcyclist, identified as Michael A. Elam, 55, of Hutton, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
The driver of the Mazda was identified as Vanessa Cappiello, 26, of Rochester, N.Y. An excerpt from the May 26, 2017 jg-tc.com article titled “Man dies in auto-motorcycle accident“:
Cappiello was cited for improper overtaking on the left and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, ISP stated.
