Failure To Yield While Turning Left As A Motorcycle Accident Cause

Failure to yield while turning left continues to be one of the most common reasons for motorcycle accidents.  These accidents – in which a vehicle makes a left-hand turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle and a collision occurs – are numerous, as seen in Illinois motorcycle accidents summarized on this site.  The highly traumatic collision often leads to the motorcyclist (and passenger, if applicable) being seriously injured.  Many of these collisions result in a motorcyclist fatality.

On October 30, 2018 there was a fatal motorcycle accident in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.  That collision was summarized in the post titled “Fatal Pilsen Motorcycle Accident That Occurred On Cermak Road.”

The accident resulted in the death of the motorcyclist, Narciso Ledesma Jr.  His family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit over the accident.

An excerpt from the November 8, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Lyft, driver sued over fatal collision with motorcyclist in Pilsen“:

The family of a motorcyclist killed last month in a Pilsen neighborhood crash with a Lyft vehicle is suing the driver and the ride-sharing company over his death.

The lawsuit, filed on Thursday by family members of 41-year-old Narciso Ledesma Jr., claims that the Lyft driver acted negligently when she caused the Oct. 30 crash, according to a copy of the suit.

Just before 5 p.m., Ledesma was riding his motorcycle east on Cermak Road when he was struck by Toyota Rav4 driven by a 36-year-old woman as she made a left from Cermak onto Throop Street, Chicago police said.

Ledesma was pronounced dead after being taken to Stroger Hospital.

According to Chicago Police, the driver of the Toyota was issued a citation for failure to yield while turning left.

Another excerpt from the article:

Ledesma’s family says the driver was working for Lyft at the time of the crash, didn’t use her turn signal and failed to yield for Ledesma, who had the right-of-way, according to court documents. They are seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

Lyft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Additional details regarding motorcycle accidents in which the driver was cited for failure to yield while turning left can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
