In the early Illinois motorcycle season, there are many potential increased dangers. These early-season dangers are discussed on the “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page.

Some of the potential for increased danger has to do with roadway conditions. There is potential for increased road hazards of various types.

In addition, one of the ongoing hazards for motorcyclists is the failure of motorists “to see” motorcycles. As seen in many serious motorcycle accidents, perhaps the most common fatal motorcycle accident type is when a motorist makes a left-hand turn immediately in the path of an oncoming motorcycle. Often, this leads to a highly traumatic collision, as the motorcyclist does not have enough time to stop before hitting the other vehicle. Many of these fatal accidents have been summarized on this site.

As well, there are many other accidents that can result when a motorist fails to see a motorcycle, such as a driver pulling out onto a street into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
