Motorcyclist Charged With DUI Following DeKalb County

While many motorcycle accidents are the fault of other motorists, one of the leading causes of motorcycle accidents is DUI, i.e. motorcyclists who ride while they are impaired by alcohol use.  This “drunk driving” has been a leading cause of motorcycle accidents for many years.  Of course, given the complexity of riding a motorcycle – including the necessity to maintain balance – any rider impairment greatly increases the possibility of a motorcycle crash.  The subject of motorcycle riding while intoxicated – including statistics – is further discussed on this site’s “Illinois Motorcycle Riding After Drinking” page.

There was a motorcycle crash Thursday (April 12, 2018) after which the motorcyclist was charged with DUI.  The crash occurred in DeKalb County.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the April 13, 2018 Daily Herald article titled “Elgin officer in critical condition after motorcycle crash“:

An Elgin police sergeant is in critical condition and was charged with DUI after a motorcycle crash Thursday in DeKalb County, officials said.

Sgt. Ken Ericson was injured in the crash at about 3 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Glidden and Base Line roads, said DeKalb County Sheriff Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan.

Ericson, 49, was on his motorcycle traveling east on Base Line Road, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a northbound vehicle on Glidden Road, according to the report.

After the collision Ericson, 49, of Elgin, was flown to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Rockford for treatment of his accident injuries.  At the time of the crash he was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured during the crash.

Ericson was charged with driving under the influence as well as failing to yield at a stop sign.

The accident remains under investigation.
