Double-Fatal Motorcycle Collision In McHenry County

There was a fatal motorcycle accident Sunday night (April 9, 2017) after which the motorcyclist and passenger died.  The accident happened in unincorporated McHenry Township.

According to details provided by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office (in an April 10, 2017 press release titled “Sheriff’s Office Investigates Double Fatal Motorcycle Crash“) the crash happened at the intersection of River Road and Charles J Miller Road.

The collision involved a collision between a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan and a 2017 Harley-Davidson FLHTK Ultra Limited motorcycle.  The motorcycle carried the rider, a 49-year-old man (later identified as Dennis Edward Spears Jr.)  and a 42-year-old female passenger (later identified as Tanya Schafer), both from Carpentersville.

First responders, including the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry Police Department, and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District went to the accident scene at 7:53 p.m.

An excerpt from the news release mentioned above:

Preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle, driven by the 49-year-old man, was traveling southbound on River Road and had the green light.  The van, driven by a 41-year-old Wonder Lake woman, was traveling northbound on River Road and was turning west onto Charles J Miller Road.   The driver of the van failed to yield to the motorcycle and the vehicles crashed in the intersection. Motorists were detoured for several hours while the crash was investigated.

The motorcyclist was taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry and he was pronounced dead.

The passenger of the motorcycle was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead.

The accident investigation is ongoing, and is being conducted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
