“Road Rash” And Other Injuries Resulting From Motorcycle Accidents

As seen in the Illinois motorcycle accidents that have caused injuries and have been summarized on this site, there are a broad range of injuries that can result from motorcycle accidents.

One type of typical injury is skin abrasion.  This type of injury is commonly referred to as “road rash.”  Road rash was an injury cited in the minor motorcycle accident that involved Luke Ford and recently happened in Georgia, as seen in the August 16, 2018 thesouthern.com article titled “Minor motorcycle crash injures Carterville native Luke Ford.”

“Road rash” can happen during a crash, when the motorcyclist’s body slides along the roadway.  Such may also happen if the motorcyclist “lays down the bike” in order to avoid an accident.

“Road rash” is also common during bicycle crashes.

One way to lessen the possibility of “road rash” is to wear protective clothing.  While, in theory, skin abrasions can happen on various parts of the body, due to various reasons the leg and hip area are among the most susceptible.

If you are injured in a motorcycle accident, there are many reasons why it is advisable to get a thorough medical exam.  This medical exam, commonly performed in the emergency room (ER), can check and assess injuries that are both readily apparent as well as injuries that may not be apparent.  There are many types of serious injuries that may not exhibit symptoms immediately after the accident.  In fact, some of these injuries may not exhibit symptoms for many hours after the accident.  Some of these injuries with “delayed onset” symptoms can be life-threatening in nature if they go untreated.  Among potentially serious injuries of this type are internal bleeding and traumatic brain injuries.

Additional discussion as to why a medical exam is valuable after a crash – from both medical and legal standpoints – is discussed on the “Reasons For Getting A Medical Exam After A Motorcycle Accident” page.

Motorcycle Loss Of Control Crashes Caused By Road Hazards

Motorcycle loss of control crashes can happen for a number of reasons.  This type of accident has been especially prevalent in Illinois during 2018, as seen in the many loss of control crashes that have been discussed on this site.

Due to the inherent stability needed to safely ride a motorcycle, any factor that causes instability can cause a loss of control.  One common reason for a sudden loss of stability is if a road hazard is encountered and has problematical impacts.

Various types of road hazards exist.  Many are unexpected, and as such may leave the rider with little if any reaction time to try to avoid a crash.  One common type of road hazard is foreign items that are on the roadway, such as cargo or other items that have just fallen off of other vehicles.  These can include such things as truck tire treads that have fallen off of trucks; metal pieces that has fallen off of cars and trucks; and other items that, if run over by the motorcycle, can cause a loss of control.

Another type of road hazard is a large pothole.  When hit, these large potholes can cause a motorcyclist to lose control of the bike and crash.

Recently, the City of Chicago chose to settle a motorcycle accident lawsuit that involved a motorcyclist hitting an unfilled pothole in the 2600 block of South Damen in 2010.  The motorcyclist, Carlo Kintanar, 31, crashed and was subsequently fatally injured.  The accident and $4 million lawsuit settlement is discussed in the July 23, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Alderman sign off on $4.5M in settlements tied to police wrongdoing.”

Additional details concerning these motorcycle loss of control crashes be seen in the sources mentioned above.

Motorcycle Collides With A Deer During Fatal Paris, Illinois Accident

One of the hazards that motorcyclists are susceptible to are deer.  Deer pose a danger to a motorcyclist as motorcycles lack structural impact protection if the motorcycle collides with a deer; as well, should a motorcyclist swerve to avoid hitting a deer, the motorcyclist can crash the motorcycle if there is sufficient instability caused by the swerving.

On this site, there have been Illinois motorcycle accidents, some fatal, involving instances when a motorcycle collides with a deer as well as crashes that occur when a motorcyclist tries to avoid hitting a deer.

The topic of motorcycle collisions with deer is further discussed on the “Road Hazards – Deer” page.

There was a fatal motorcycle-deer collision Thursday (May 24, 2018) night in Paris, Illinois.

The accident occurred on Lower Terre Haute Road.  The motorcyclist was identified as Donald Scott, Jr., 60, of Terre Haute.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal motorcycle accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above.

Alleged Meth Use By Motorist In Fatal Naperville Motorcycle Accident

In the September 11, 2017 post titled “Motorcyclist Dies Following Naperville SUV-Motorcycle Collision” a September 9, 2017 motorcycle accident in Naperville was summarized.  As seen in that  post, the accident injuries led to the death of Calabria M. Taber, 21, of Maple Park.

As seen in many Illinois accidents, the accident involved a motorist attempting to make a left-hand turn immediately in front of an oncoming motorcycle.  The motorist was ticketed for failure to yield turning left.

Subsequent information has been made public with regard to the circumstances regarding the crash.

As discussed in various media sources, including the December 12, 2017 Naperville Sun article titled “Teen had meth in his system at time of fatal Naperville crash, prosecutors say” as well as the December 13 Naperville Patch article titled “Meth Was In Teen’s System During Fatal Crash:  Prosecutors,” the 17-year-old male driver of the SUV that struck the motorcycle allegedly had meth in his system.  He has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI resulting in death.

Motorists who drive under the influence of drugs pose a large risk to motorcyclists for various reasons.  One of these reasons is that such drug-impaired motorists may have an even harder time “seeing” and properly driving around motorcycles.

The issue of impaired motorists and the hazard such drivers pose to motorcyclists is further discussed on the “The Danger To Motorcyclists Presented By Drugged Drivers” page.

Two excerpts from that page:

This inability of a vehicle’s driver to “see” and safely interact with motorcycles is made much harder if the motorist is impaired, either by alcohol or by drug use.  Many Illinois motorcycle accidents which are not the fault of the motorcyclist are caused by impaired drivers.

also:

While, in the past, such motorist impairment typically involved drinking before driving (DUI), in recent years this driver impairment increasingly has involved driving after drug use.  The following discusses the issue of “drugged driving” including Chicago-area traffic accidents involving drivers who have been impaired by drug use.  At least two recent Illinois fatal motorcycle accidents involve a drug-impaired driver striking a motorcycle.  Those accidents are discussed below.

Additional details concerning this drug-impaired driving issue as it concerns motorcyclists can be seen in the sources mentioned above.

Head Injuries Resulting From Illinois Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents often lead to the motorcyclist (and, if applicable, passenger) being injured.  As seen in the many Illinois motorcycle accidents summarized on this site, there are many types of accident injuries that can occur.  For those bike accidents that are not fatal, the range of possible accident injuries is extensive.

Among the most serious type of motorcycle accident injuries is those involving head impacts.  Brain injuries are notable in many regards, and can have complex and long-lasting impacts on one’s health.  On this site, brain injuries due to motorcycle accidents are discussed on the “Head Injuries Resulting From Motorcycle Accidents” and “Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) And Concussions” pages.

Recently there have been a number of Illinois motorcycle accidents (some fatal) which involved head injuries.  These crashes include:

If a rider suffers a head impact during a motorcycle accident, it is highly recommended that a thorough medical exam is conducted as soon as possible.  There are many reasons for this recommendation, as further explained on the “Head Injuries Resulting From Motorcycle Accidents” page mentioned above.   Among those reasons is that with head trauma, there is always the possibility of a serious (and possibly life-threatening) condition developing, such as bleeding on the brain.

From a legal perspective, accidents involving head injuries often lead to lawsuits, due to the frequent costly nature of such injuries, as well as various types of impairments and disabilities that often arise from serious head injuries.

While there are no actions that riders can take to “guarantee” that brain injuries won’t occur during accidents, among the best safety measures is to wear a motorcycle helmet.
