Motorcycle Collision In Chicago’s Mount Greenwood Neighborhood

A motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a pickup truck Thursday (April 26, 2018) night in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood.  The collision was a “hit & run” accident in which the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene of the accident following the collision.

According to information provided by Chicago Police, the accident happened at approximately 10:40 p.m., as the motorcyclist was riding westbound in the 3300 block of West 111th Street.  At that time, a black F-150 pickup truck made a left-hand turn in front of the oncoming motorcycle at Christiana Street.  The motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the pickup truck.  The driver of the pickup truck then drove away heading west on 110th Street.

The motorcyclist, a Chicago Police dispatcher identified as Mike “Doc” Tracy, was taken to the hospital for treatment of accident injuries, and was reported to be in serious condition.

This Chicago motorcycle accident is being investigated by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.

Those with information concerning the accident or the pickup truck, which is black with tan side panels, and likely damage to the passenger’s side, are asked to call Chicago Police at (312) 745-4521.

Illinois Motorcycle Riding Safety Discussion And Recommendations

With the main Illinois motorcycle riding season approaching, there are a variety of motorcycle riding safety issues that should be considered.

Riding early in the Illinois season presents a variety of factors that may adversely impact the ability to safety ride a motorcycle.  These factors are discussed on the “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page.

Other issues should be considered as well.  The Kane County Connects post of April 18, 2018 titled “To Prevent Fatal Crashes, IDOT, ISP Offer Free Motorcycle Training Courses” discusses various other methods to increase safety.

As seen in the post, “Kane County saw at least seven fatal motorcycle crashes in 2016.”

The post mentions motorcycle training courses, which have been previously mentioned on this site.

Other recommendations from the post:

Riders should protect themselves by wearing personal protective gear on every ride. This includes high-visibility (Hi-Viz) clothing, eye protection, gloves, jackets, pants, boots and a U.S. DOT-approved helmet.

Additionally, riders should never drink and ride. Drinking alcohol reduces reaction times, increases fatigue and leads to poor judgment.

One-third of all motorcycle fatalities in Illinois involve rider impairment.

While wearing a motorcycle helmet is not required by Illinois law, there are many benefits to wearing a helmet while riding.  The safety benefits of wearing a motorcycle helmet are further discussed on the “Illinois Motorcycle Safety And Helmet Use” page.  As discussed on that page, motorcycle helmets substantially reduce head injuries, which often prove to be fatal in motorcycle accidents.  For serious traumatic brain injuries that are not fatal, a range of substantial temporary and long-term impairments can occur.  Long-term impairments can be life-altering in nature and can require substantial amount of ongoing health care and rehabilitation.

Additional details regarding these Illinois motorcycle riding safety issues can be seen in the sources mentioned above.

Motorcyclist Charged With DUI Following DeKalb County

While many motorcycle accidents are the fault of other motorists, one of the leading causes of motorcycle accidents is DUI, i.e. motorcyclists who ride while they are impaired by alcohol use.  This “drunk driving” has been a leading cause of motorcycle accidents for many years.  Of course, given the complexity of riding a motorcycle – including the necessity to maintain balance – any rider impairment greatly increases the possibility of a motorcycle crash.  The subject of motorcycle riding while intoxicated – including statistics – is further discussed on this site’s “Illinois Motorcycle Riding After Drinking” page.

There was a motorcycle crash Thursday (April 12, 2018) after which the motorcyclist was charged with DUI.  The crash occurred in DeKalb County.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the April 13, 2018 Daily Herald article titled “Elgin officer in critical condition after motorcycle crash“:

An Elgin police sergeant is in critical condition and was charged with DUI after a motorcycle crash Thursday in DeKalb County, officials said.

Sgt. Ken Ericson was injured in the crash at about 3 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Glidden and Base Line roads, said DeKalb County Sheriff Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan.

Ericson, 49, was on his motorcycle traveling east on Base Line Road, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a northbound vehicle on Glidden Road, according to the report.

After the collision Ericson, 49, of Elgin, was flown to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Rockford for treatment of his accident injuries.  At the time of the crash he was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured during the crash.

Ericson was charged with driving under the influence as well as failing to yield at a stop sign.

The accident remains under investigation.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this Illinois motorcycle accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the April 13 Elgin Courier-News article titled “Elgin cop in critical condition, charged with DUI after off-duty motorcycle accident:  officials.”

Truck-Motorcycle Crash Occurs Near Holiday Shores

As discussed on the “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page, there are many reasons why riding a motorcycle in the early Illinois motorcycle season (generally starting in March or April) can be more hazardous than riding during the summer and fall.

One of these reasons is that motorists are not as used to “seeing” motorcycles in March and April as they are later in the season.  As discussed often on this site, one of the main reasons that motorcycle accidents occur is that motorists “fail to see” motorcycles and therefore fail to avoid collisions with them.

There was an early-season truck-motorcycle crash on Thursday (April 5, 2018) near Holiday Shores.  Details on the truck-motorcycle crash appear limited at this time.  Details on why the crash occurred do not appear to be publicly available.  However, it is being reported on Riverbender.com (in the April 6, 2018 article titled “One person airlifted after accident involving a motorcycle on I-159“) that one person was airlifted from the accident scene.

Additional details regarding these Illinois motorcycle accident topics can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
