According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, deputies went to the accident scene at approximately 8:00 a.m., near the area of Vaughn Road and Jimmy Lane. A motorcycle accident had occurred, in which a motorcycle with passenger had ran off the road and struck a tree.

Evidence indicated a 2012 Yamaha motorcycle had been traveling westbound on Vaughn road and failed to negotiate a 90-degree turn, subsequently leaving the road and striking a tree. Both the driver and the rider were thrown from the motorcycle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The motorcyclist was identified as William L. Skelton, 34, of Johnston City. He was declared dead at the accident scene.
The passenger was identified as Heather Basenberg, 27, of Du Quoin. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her accident injuries, and later died from these injuries.
