Tire Blowouts As A Motorcycle Accident Cause

One of potential hazards facing motorcyclists is that of mechanical problems that can occur during riding.  These mechanical problems can pose a significant problem for the rider due to various problems they can cause.  Due to the inherent balance needed to maintain a motorcycle’s stability, any issue that can cause instability can lead to a crash.  Perhaps the best way to avoid mechanical problems is to perform regular maintenance and otherwise be aware of mechanical issues that may arise.

One of the mechanical problems potentially facing motorcyclists is tire blowouts.  Tire blowouts have led to fatal Illinois motorcycle accidents in the past.  Many aspects of tire blowouts are discussed on the “Tire Blowouts As An Accident Cause” page.  While there can be many reasons that such a blowout occurs, certain factors tend to increase the likelihood of such an event.

There was a fatal motorcycle accident Monday night (September 25, 2017) on I-65 in Northwest Indiana in which a tire blowout on a motorcycle led to a fatal crash.  It does not appear as if the reason for the tire blowout has been publicly disclosed at this time.

The accident is discussed in a variety of media sources, including the September 26, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Motorcyclist killed in crash after tire blowout on I-65.”

An excerpt from the article:

Bahnan Dawood, 50, was driving a 2012 Honda motorcycle north at 11:13 p.m. on I-65 near mile marker 233.5 – about 3 ½ miles north of the Fair Oaks exit – when the bike’s rear tire blew out, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.

The blowout caused Dawood to lose control of the bike, police said. The motorcycle came to rest on the outside shoulder while Dawood landed in the lanes of traffic, where he was hit by a semi and run over by several other vehicles. None of the vehicles stopped.

Dawood, of Des Plaines, died at the accident scene.  At the time of the accident he was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the nwitimes.com article of September 26 titled “Des Plaines man struck, killed after tire on motorcycle blows out on I-65…
