Illinois Motorcycle-Deer Collisions

On this site, many types of road hazards facing motorcyclists have been discussed.  Among those road hazards are those posed by collisions with deer.   These collisions have the potential to cause serious accidents and various types of accident injuries.

The hazards presented by deer – as well as tips for avoiding deer – have been discussed on the “Road Hazards – Deer” page.  Additionally, there have been a number of accidents – some fatal – discussed on this site that have involved Illinois motorcyclists who have collided with deer.

Deer can present risk to motorcyclists for many reasons.  Deer can appear – or run across the road – unexpectedly, and often when they run it is in an unpredictable manner.

While this risk can happen at any time, the odds of hitting a deer while riding is higher during certain times of the year, as well as during certain times of the day and night.

The Naperville Patch article of October 21, 2016 (“Oh Deer!  Risk of Hitting Deer While Driving Up From Last Year“) highlights statistics from State Farm regarding the overall frequency of vehicle collisions with deer in Illinois.  Tips for avoiding these types of collisions are also provided.

Additionally, the Forest Preserve of DuPage County provided information on the topic a few years ago.  This information was summarized in the November 2, 2011 post titled “Elevated Risk Of Deer-Vehicle Collisions In Autumn.”
