2012 Statistics Concerning Illinois Motorcycle Accident Fatalities

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has published a document in its startseeingmotorcycles.org site titled “2012 Motorcycle Fatalities – Quick Facts.” (pdf)

This document provides various details as to the 148 Illinois motorcyclist deaths in 2012, an increase of nearly 2% from the 145 motorcyclist deaths of 2011.

Below are a few of the notable excerpts:

  • The 148 motorcyclists killed account for over 15% of all motor vehicle fatalities that occurred in 2012. In comparison, motorcycle registrations comprise 3-4% of all motor vehicle registrations.
  • Of the 148 motorcyclists killed in 2012, 21 wore a DOT-compliant helmet, and eight wore
a helmet that was not DOT-compliant. 115 (78%) of the 148 motorcyclists killed in 2012
    were not wearing a helmet.
  • Generally, the hours of 6:00 p.m. on Friday through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday are deadlier
for motorcyclists than other periods of the week. In 2012, 70 (47%) of the 148 fatal
crashes involving motorcycles occurred during the weekend between 6:00 p.m. on
Friday and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
  • 110 (74%) of the 148 fatal crashes involving motorcycles occurred during May –
September. March had an abnormally high number of fatalities with 13 (9%).
  • 59 (42%) of the 141 motorcycle operators killed in 2012 had been drinking (positive
BAC). Their BAC results ranged from 0.01 to 0.30, with the average BAC being 0.14. Of
the 59 operators killed who had been drinking, 47 (80%) had a BAC greater than or
    equal to 0.08.
  • Weather and roadway surface condition are generally not factors in crashes that result in
motorcycle fatalities. In 2012, approximately 96% of such crashes occurred in clear
    weather, and on dry pavement.

The document also displays in what counties motorcycle accidents most frequently occurred, as well as lists the primary reasons attributed to causing motorcycle accidents.

Motorcycle Accident Wrongful Death Lawsuit

A motorcycle accident lawsuit regarding a fatal motorcycle accident in Texas is discussed in the December 2 Southeast Texas Record article titled “Ill. motorist named in suit over deadly Oct. wreck.”  The motorist defendant in the lawsuit is from Illinois.

Excerpts from the article:

Tamlyn Gregg filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Northbrook, Ill., resident Eduard Vernovsky on behalf of the late Hunter Austin Gregg in Galveston federal court on Nov. 25.

The suit explains that the younger Gregg rode his motorcycle eastbound in the 9600 block of U.S. 90 near Alkire Lake Drive the night of Oct. 5 when Vernovsky reportedly failed to yield the right-of-way to him.

The article also discusses further details of the accident and wrongful death lawsuit.
