Vehicles Driving In The Wrong Direction In The Chicago Area

In the recent past there have been a variety of “wrong-way” driver incidents on Chicago area expressways and Lake Shore Drive. Some of these incidents involved accidents, including fatal accidents.  While none of these incidents involved motorcycles, it seems advisable to elevate awareness of the increasing nature of cars driving on the wrong side of the road, especially since accidents involving these “wrong-way” drivers often include fatalities.

Motorcyclist From Schaumburg, Illinois Dies After Motorcycle Accident

Last night, a motorcyclist from Schaumburg, Illinois was killed after he hit a curb at an intersection and lost control of his motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, Mark Braun, was 50 years old.

The accident happened at the intersection of Irving Park Road and Wise Roads in Schaumburg at 6:37 p.m., according to police.

The motorcyclist was the only person involved in the accident.  It is uncertain as to what caused the accident.

Three People Injured After Motorcycle Hits Deer Near Fisher, Illinois

Three people were injured after a motorcyclist hit a deer near Fisher, Illinois on Thursday night.

The motorcyclist, Chad D. Hanks, 39, of Rantoul, was riding his motorcycle with his passenger, Laura L. Hanks, east on U.S. 136 when he hit a deer.  The accident happened just east of County Road 700 E at approximately 8:00 p.m.

An excerpt from the April 19 News-Gazette article titled “Three people reported injured in accident” :

Police said that Hanks and a passenger, Laura L. Hanks, 36, of Rantoul, had moved to the south ditch of the road, but the motorcycle was still in the road after hitting the deer when the motorcycle was hit by an eastbound 2002 Toyota Corolla driven by Leslie R. Ingrum, 79, of Dewey.

Chad Hanks was listed in good condition Friday at Carle Foundation Hospital. Laura Hanks and Ingrum were treated and released from Carle.

Motorcyclist Injured When He Is Rear-Ended By SUV In Jackson County, Illinois

On Sunday afternoon, a motorcyclist on Highway 127 in Jackson County, Illinois was injured when his motorcycle was rear-ended by a SUV.

The motorcyclist, David Jennings, 44, of Pinckneyville, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the course of the accident.

An excerpt from the April 15 KFVS story on the accident, titled “Pinckneyville man injured in motorcycle crash” :

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, David Jennings, 44, of Pinckneyville was southbound on Highway 127 on his Harley Davidson motorcycle and slowed down to make a left hand turn onto Lightfoot Road.

Krista Davis, 36, of Du Quoin was behind Jennings and her SUV failed to yield and hit the rear of the motorcycle, according to Sgt. Carson Bunton.

Davis was issued a citation for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.  In the course of the accident she receive minor injuries.

Motorcycle Accident In Crystal Lake, Illinois Leaves One Motorcyclist Dead

A fatal motorcycle accident happened in Crystal Lake, Illinois on Thursday afternoon.

Huntley Fire Department Capt. John C. Winkelman, 54, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a sedan on Route 176.

Winkelman was riding his Harley westbound on Route 176, when a sedan pulled out from Mt. Thabor Road, in front of his path.  The minivan driver, a 27-year-old woman from Woodstock, Illinois, tried to stop at the last instant but was unable to prevent a collision.  Winkelman struck the sedan’s driver side door and was thrown from the motorcycle.

Winkelman was taken to Centegra Memorial Medical Center, in Woodstock, Illinois, but he never regained consciousness.

The driver of the sedan suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Centegra.
