Motorcycle Helmet – Safety Effectiveness Statistics

In the previous post (“The Continual Debate On Illinois Having No Motorcycle Helmet Law“) gave various motorcyclist perspectives and background concerning the continual debate on whether Illinois should have a motorcycle helmet law.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has a page titled “Traffic Safety Facts.” (pdf)

Although this page is from 2008, it has a variety of statistics and commentary on motorcycle accidents.  With regard to the effectiveness of motorcycle helmets, some excerpts (on page 6) include :

NHTSA estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008. If all motorcyclists had worn helmets, an additional 823 lives could have been saved.

Helmets are estimated to be 37-percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to
motorcycle riders and 41-percent for motorcycle passengers.

This means for every 100 motorcycle riders killed in crashes while not wearing a helmet, 37 of them could have been saved had all 100 worn helmets.

The Continual Debate On Illinois Having No Motorcycle Helmet Law

An article in the October 9 2011 St. Louis Beacon, titled “Motorcycle helmet laws separate Illinois, Missouri” gives various legislative background and motorcyclist perspectives on the “motorcycle helmet law” vs. “no helmet law” debate.

As the article states:

Illinois is one of three states that have no law regarding motorcycle helmets, while Missouri is one of many that requires every rider to wear a helmet.

For detailed information on state helmet use laws, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has the page titled “Summary Chart of Key Provisions of State Motorcycle Safety Laws.” (pdf)

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Due To Ladders On Highway

A blog post of September 16 titled “Motorcycle Accidents Caused By Debris On Roadway” previously discussed hazards faced by motorcyclists due to items or debris on roadways.

A fatal motorcycle accident in California is yet another example of this type of hazard.  An excerpt from an October 19 story from the Morgan Hill Times titled “Two ladders cause fatal accident on US 101” :

Hoc Nguyen, 28, of San Jose was riding his 2009 Yamaha motorcycle on U.S. 101 south of Metcalf Road last Thursday about 70 mph when he ran over a set of ladders that were blocking two lanes.

Meanwhile, a 63-year-old man from Gilroy in a 2000 Honda traveling slightly behind the motorcycle struck Nguyen after he was ejected from his motorcycle. Nguyen suffered fatal injuries.

After the accident, Nguyen was removed from the traffic lanes to the right shoulder where CPR was performed by a witness. San Jose police arrived and assumed CPR without success. He was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m. Oct. 13. The driver from Gilroy was not arrested and did not suffer any injuries.

Article Recalls Motorcycle Collision With A Deer In Southern Illinois

Yesterday the Olney Daily Mail had an article titled “Shryocks tell tale” that details a motorcycle accident and subsequent recovery of Scot and Dalla Shryock.  The accident happened in Southern Illinois on July 15 at approximately 2:00 p.m.  in which they hit a deer.

As recalled by Dalla Shryock in the article with regard to the deer’s actions leading to the accident:

“I saw a brown spot,” Dalla said.  “It just jumped out in front of us.”

The rest of the article discusses the accident and the couple’s recovery efforts from the injuries they sustained during the collision with the deer.

Those who have had encounters and/or accidents with deer know that deer can be very unpredictable in their movements, and as such can present a major hazard.
